Wyatt’s Take

  • Travis Kelce is already shopping around for a broadcasting job while still playing for the Chiefs
  • ESPN is reportedly in a contract fight with longtime announcer Troy Aikman and could land Kelce instead
  • The push for Kelce fits ESPN’s bigger move toward loud personalities over traditional sports journalists

According to Pro Football Talk founder Mike Florio, Travis Kelce started reaching out to networks about broadcasting jobs last year.

Florio told the Pardon My Take podcast that Kelce and Greg Olsen asked Amazon if Kirk Herbstreit’s spot would open up this season.

“Last year, [Kelce] and Greg Olsen were inquiring with Amazon about whether [Kirk Herbstreit’s] Amazon spot would be available this season,” Florio said. “Kelce was already looking into this before this season.”

ESPN is also dealing with tension inside its own Monday Night Football booth.

Troy Aikman has not received a new contract offer even though his former partner Joe Buck already signed a six-year, $108 million deal.

“There’s probably a time and a place for all that. I don’t know if now is the time. I don’t know if it’s hard to figure out kind of what happened. I’ll broadcast through this season and I’ll be a free agent at the end of the year and kind of see what happens,” Aikman said.

Florio believes Kelce will be the top target for ESPN, CBS, and Amazon when he hits free agency after this season.

“He’s going to be the one they all want,” Florio said. “CBS is going to be looking, ESPN will be looking, and Amazon has a clause that they can tear up [Herbstreit’s] contract if they find someone better.”

Kelce already has strong ties to the business side of sports media.

His podcast New Heights is distributed by Amazon, and his brother Jason is gaining a bigger role at ESPN.

Travis also brings the global spotlight from his relationship with Taylor Swift, which could pull in younger female viewers the league wants.

ESPN has already leaned into this style by giving Pat McAfee a bigger platform, and the numbers show it is working.

Five of the ten highest-rated College GameDay episodes in the show’s history have come since McAfee joined the show.

Executives at the network know personality-driven shows are bringing in the viewers they need.

Travis Kelce fits that same mold with his Super Bowl rings, podcast success, and larger-than-life personality.

ESPN could land both Kelce brothers plus McAfee and build a louder, more entertaining broadcast team.

Wyatt Matters

Middle America wants straight talk about the game, not lectures from polished analysts. Travis Kelce talks football like a guy at the tailgate, and that kind of real voice is what working folks want to hear on Monday nights.
