  • Another activist judge blocks efforts to protect American elections from noncitizen voting.
  • The ruling shields election officials who ignore federal warnings about illegal ballots.
  • This decision comes just days before voters decide who controls Congress.

A Biden-appointed federal judge issued a last-minute order late Friday that blocks the Trump administration from enforcing election integrity rules in key states.

The ruling stops the Justice Department and Homeland Security from requiring local officials to remove noncitizens from voter rolls or separate their ballots.

U.S. District Judge Trina Thompson said the administration’s warnings to state officials went too far and could violate the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

“One of the hallmarks of a fair election is the freedom to exercise the right to vote free from threat, fear, or intimidation,” Thompson wrote.

“Free exercise of the right to vote is a core tenet of our democracy. It requires safeguarding to ensure full participation and public trust in our elections.”

The decision came after a lawsuit filed by election worker unions and civil rights groups against the administration’s efforts to stop illegal voting.

Letters sent to all fifty states and Washington D.C. in July warned that local officials could face criminal charges for knowingly letting noncitizens vote in federal elections.

In California alone the dispute involves around twenty thousand registered voters whose citizenship status the Trump administration questioned.

The judge’s order prevents federal officials from threatening criminal charges to make election workers follow the new integrity standards.

Workers also cannot be prosecuted for handling ballots in ways that state and federal law require.

Federal officials must now notify the recipients of those July letters that the court has blocked the demands.

They must report any new warrants or subpoenas related to election materials to the court as well.

The ruling stays in effect through November sixteenth, covering the midterm elections and the days immediately after.

Wyatt Matters

Middle America still believes that every legal vote should count and every illegal vote should be stopped. When judges appointed by one party step in to block basic safeguards days before an election, regular folks see the system tilting against them. Honest elections are not a partisan issue; they are the foundation of self-government.
