  • Texas lawmaker accompanied a father and son from detention.
  • Officials clash on family’s legal status and asylum claims.
  • Debate grows over how border law is enforced in America.

Rep. Joaquin Castro personally escorted a five-year-old boy and his father from a Texas detention center after their release. The family, originally from Ecuador, has sparked public debate over how the law treats those who cross the border.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche claimed the family didn’t apply for asylum, despite lawyers for the family saying an active asylum claim is underway. Both sides disputed facts about their entry and legal standing.

“That is not true. There’s a very meaningful dispute about whether they had properly applied for asylum,” Blanche said.

He stated that entering the U.S. without permission is considered a crime, even if there’s no prior criminal record.

“The fact that they’re here illegally is a crime,” Blanche explained.

The family was released after a judge’s decision and brought to Minnesota by Rep. Castro. Following their release, Rep. Ilhan Omar posted a photo with the family and welcomed them publicly.

“Don’t let anyone tell you this isn’t your home. America became the most powerful, prosperous nation on earth because of immigrants not in spite of them.”

There’s ongoing disagreement in Washington about whether people here illegally should be held in detention or let out on bail while their case moves forward.

These types of stories stir up concern in the heartland about border security, fairness, and what it means for hardworking Americans.

Very true. The liberals loved that political prisoners were taken from their homes and loved ones.

If illegal alien invaders are not held in detention they will simply become some other sanctuary cities problem because they will skip out and it will be difficult to find them when it’s time to deport them. EVERY person who enters our country without our permission is a criminal. If someone enters your home without permission they are criminals and, in some cases (generally conservative run states) will be arrested and taken to jail. In liberal run states they can claim they are homesteading on someone’s property and usually the owner is the one who has to prove to a court that they are criminals and trespassing (and in some liberal courts even that doesn’t work).
