A Texas woman was given six years in prison after she set fire to a church in Washington state last year. The court found Natasha Marie O’Dell guilty on three felonies, including arson and damaging religious property.

The fire destroyed Seattle Laestadian Lutheran Church, causing over $3.2 million in damages. The judge said,

“The scope of the destruction is staggering. You burned down the spiritual home of a congregation … The wounds you have inflicted deepen for each day they are away from their home.”

O’Dell admitted she acted out of anger and targeted the church on purpose. She bought gasoline and lighters at a service station and was recorded on security cameras during the arson.

The church is now forced to hold services in a rented school. One firefighter was hurt battling the blaze, but no churchgoers were present at the time.

Officials said O’Dell showed no regard for the safety of the church community or first responders. Her restitution payment will be decided later.
