January 1, Taxpayer Alert: Lawmakers Approve $750 Monthly Handouts

Durham County in North Carolina has set forth a new pilot program centered on guaranteed income, aiming to assist underprivileged families within its jurisdiction.

Christened “DCo Thrives,” this initiative secured unanimous support from the Durham County Board of County Commissioners during a recent session.

As a part of DCo Thrives, 125 selected families will be awarded a guaranteed monthly income of $750, followed by subsequent surveys to measure the initiative’s impact.

This move from Durham is in alignment with a series of other such programs that have been initiated across various U.S. cities.

The primary objective of these programs remains testing the potential and efficacy of universal basic income (UBI) — a concept advocating that a pre-determined amount of monthly income could lead to enhanced alleviation of poverty and an uplifted standard of living.

To further evaluate the program’s implications, another sample set comprising 125 individuals, who aren’t beneficiaries of the monetary grant, will be surveyed to juxtapose the results against those who did receive the $750 monthly boost.

Financial backing for DCo Thrives is sourced from $1.69 million secured from the American Rescue Plan Act — a COVID-19 relief bill passed shortly after President Biden’s inauguration.

Criteria for enrollment in the program stipulate that beneficiary households must encompass a child aged 18 or below and have an income level equal to or below 30% of the county’s median income.

In a statement to ABC 11, Chairwoman of the Durham County Board of Commissioners, Brenda Howerton, accentuated the program’s child-centric focus.

“Children cannot thrive. If their parents are not thriving and they don’t have a house to live in, if they don’t have food for their children, our children cannot thrive, and they cannot learn,” Howerton articulated.

Historically, this isn’t Durham’s maiden venture into UBI-aligned pilots.

A prior initiative titled “Excel,” initiated by the City of Durham last year, disbursed $600 monthly stipends to 109 formerly incarcerated individuals. Though this initiative culminated earlier this year, Durham earmarked $1 million in its budget for program continuation.

UBI’s proponents champion its potential in facilitating more feasible employment prospects due to diminished economic constraints.

They further believe in its capability to aid families in navigating healthcare and education hurdles. Conversely, UBI’s critics perceive it as financially unfeasible on a national scale, emphasizing the enormous tax implications it could trigger.

Andrew Yang, during his 2020 presidential campaign run, brought UBI into the limelight, labeling it as a “Freedom Dividend.”

The wave of UBI trials isn’t just domestic.

On an international scale, notably, an expansive UBI pilot is underway in Africa. Spearheaded by GiveDirectly since 2017, this trial has involved transferring funds to around 20,000 individuals across nearly 200 Kenyan villages. An additional 100 villages serve as a control group in this study.

This ought to keep them on welfare instead of working for a living.

Correct and I bet it’s all commie demicraps that did it. Get rid of all welfare unless you can prove you truly are mentally or physically unable to care for yourself.

Government handouts keep way too many people dependent on the government, which allows that government to have power over those people. Less government is the road to freedom.

A gold miner does not get gold with no effort. He only gets the gold by working the mine. That concept is evidently to heavy for the light weight brains who dream up all these schemes to give other peoples gold to the miner who only looks at the mine

Modern welfare just does not work. You cannot give somebody something for nothing and expect them to appreciate it. There are to many people that feel “we” owe them a living. Life cannot be appreciated if it is not deserved. I was raised in a poor family and we received welfare. but not todays type of welfare. We ate day old bread, lots of peanut butter with mushy bananas, lard sandwiches. Classmates thought i was spoiled because the crust was cut off the bread!! Little did they know that the crust was cut off because of the mold. But that life taught me to make sure my family of today never had to endure the same. I have always worked and if one job did not pay enough, I worked two!!

This is not the way to solve the problems facing the poor. Handouts are just that – handouts. The solution should have a required work elememt.

I believe this sort of thing was already tried back in the colonial days. A community garden had fewer and fewer people show up to work the planting and harvesting. It was determined that those who didn’t grow their own food didn’t eat.

The money they are using is money that was created out of nothing When the program runs out of money what then more budget tampering taking from a Hwy fund to finance the utopian dream that will bankrupt this nation sorry to tell you the USA is already there.Look at all the major infrastructure in this country bridges road power distribution ECT failing or not functioning.A hungry belly will make you find a job but endless welfare at the expense of the average worker is a crime put these board members under the same program see how they like i

This will diminish the incentive to work. Why work if the government is going to take your reward for working? This is a plan to institute Socialism and destroy Capitalism. Everywhere this has been instituted, instead of raising the standard of living for some, it has lowered the standard of living for all.It stifles innovation-which raises the standard of living for all. Just look to any Socialist Country to see how miserable it’s population is, and how wealthy it’s government officials are. Proponents of this model of governance/society like to call it Liberalism, but it is actually Socialism. It is the classic Wolf in Sheep’s clothing- Pure Evil

Rather than giving them dollars, teach them a skill and provide them with a job. People need to have confidence in themselves to provide a living for their families, rather than relying on the government. Money has becomea “God” to many; instead it is a toool of “Satan”.
Those with money (in excess) become the Dictators and the rulers of others. If a person can become self sufficient, they can cling together and help each other. We need to rethink our methods of helping others.
