January 1, Sen. Dianne Feinstein Hospitalized After Falling Down

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein was hospitalized recently after a minor fall in her San Francisco home.

A statement from her office clarified, “Senator Feinstein briefly went to the hospital yesterday afternoon as a precaution after a minor fall in her home. All of her scans were clear and she returned home.”

Despite the swift reassurance from her team, Feinstein’s recent health issues and her performance in the Senate have raised concerns.

The 90-year-old Senator took an extended leave from her duties earlier this year, spending nearly three months away from the Senate due to a combination of health complications including shingles, Ramsay Hunt syndrome, and encephalitis.

Compounding these health issues, recent behavior in the Senate has further drawn attention.

During a vote on the Defense Appropriations Bill on July 27, Senator Feinstein deviated from the standard voting protocol.

When her turn arrived, rather than providing a straightforward “aye” or “nay”, Feinstein began delivering an unanticipated speech.

This necessitated intervention from her aides, one of whom had to step in and instruct her to simply state “aye”.

Such instances have reignited debates, especially among conservatives, about the possible need for age limits on politicians, considering the weight and responsibility of their roles.

Feinstein’s future in the Senate has also become a topic of discussion. In February, she announced her intention to step down in 2024 after a long tenure of over 30 years.

However, given her recent health challenges and moments of confusion, many Republicans have publicly voiced the opinion that perhaps an earlier retirement might be in the best interest of her constituents.

I don’t understand why people keep voting for people who are so old, they can’t think for themselves. They are making decisions for our country??? Terrifying thought. There needs to be an age limit, term limit, or something!

I feel sorry for her but it is a disgrace she is still sitting in that sear and shame on Congress for allowing it along with Fetterman and Biden

If she would just fall down some stairs, and crack her skull open, the world would be a better place.

This has been a problem for years. In the case of Strom Thurmond who was going on 101 years old when he died, and had been a Senator from South Carolina for 49 years, after serving as governor for a 4 year term. Just before his retirement, they wheeled him in the Senate Chambers on a gurney so that he could be a deciding vote that the Republicans needed. He had not been in attendance for a long time due to his health and frailty. But, Congress will still not deal with age limitations or health problems of their members. From Wikipedia, “In a 2001 interview, colleague Fritz Hollings said that Thurmond was no longer “mentally keen” nor did he “have a home, and someone has said the best nursing home is the U.S. Senate.” Ira Shapiro of The Gazette cited Thurmond by the end of his tenure as “a joke and an embarrassment; virtually unable to speak or hear, he had to be carried into committee meetings.”

I am elderly myself (almost 74), and would love it if Congress established age and fitness standards for the entire 3 branches of government. But they won’t because they desperately attempt to hold onto power until they are 6 feet under. These old hanger-ons do not care about what happens when they pass a poor legislation. They will be dead and the country can suffer with it as far as they are concerned.
