January 1, Schumer Pushes Shutdown Deal With Health Care Perks
Wyatt’s Take
- Schumer offers to extend Obamacare tax credits if shutdown ends
- Plan includes short-term government funding, more spending
- GOP expected to review proposal soon
Senator Chuck Schumer has put forward a new idea to break the government shutdown. He’s linking extra Obamacare tax credits with reopening the government.
Schumer said on the Senate floor,
“We’d like to offer a simple proposal that would reopen the government and extend the ACA premium tax credits simultaneously, and then have the opportunity to start negotiating longer term solutions to health care costs. Let’s do all three.”
The plan would keep the government running with a short-term funding bill and throw in a one-year extension of Obamacare tax breaks. Schumer also wants a new committee to work on tackling rising health care costs down the road.
There’s talk of a package with some year-long spending bills from earlier debates. Senate Republicans are looking over the proposal, but haven’t said yes or no yet.
Stay tuned as Congress decides whether to make a deal or keep the shutdown rolling.
