Wyatt’s Take

  • A Romanian man got into Oregon’s government computers without permission.
  • He sold this access and others like it across the U.S., costing victims hundreds of thousands of dollars.
  • He could spend up to seven years in prison for his crimes.

A man from Romania admitted he broke into an Oregon state office’s computer network in 2021. He also carried out similar attacks on other American victims.

Court records say Catalin Dragomir, age 45, sold access to a government computer after he got in without authorization. He even shared samples of personal information to make the deal.

Dragomir didn’t just target Oregon. He sold off access to several victims around the country, racking up at least $250,000 in losses.

The FBI arrested Dragomir in Romania in November 2024 and brought him to the United States early in 2025.

He pleaded guilty to stealing information from a protected computer and to aggravated identity theft.

Dragomir will be sentenced on May 26, 2026. The maximum is five years in prison for the computer crime and a required extra two years for identity theft. The judge will decide the final time behind bars.

The FBI’s Portland office led the investigation. U.S. and Romanian authorities worked together to capture and bring Dragomir to justice. The case was handled by attorneys in the Justice Department’s cybercrime section and the Oregon U.S. Attorney’s Office.

This case is another reminder of the growing threat from overseas hackers. Crooks like Dragomir steal from hard-working Americans and government offices, costing real money and trust along the way.

Stay alert, protect your personal info, and demand your elected leaders crack down on cybercrime.
