Wyatt’s Take

  • AI brought back Randy Travis’ classic voice on a new song.
  • His wife and team say music is his heart and soul.
  • There’s hope for more songs made with this technology.

Country star Randy Travis lost his ability to sing and speak after a 2013 stroke, but new artificial intelligence technology has brought his voice back for a fresh track. His supporters say it’s a breakthrough, not only for him, but for showing how technology can be used for good.

After his stroke, Travis suffered from aphasia, which made speaking and singing extremely tough.

Now, using new AI models, Travis’ famous tones live again on “Where That Came From.”

“Music is what he’s made of. Music is his heart, it’s his soul.”

Travis himself called it a blessing, saying

“By God’s grace and the support of family, friends, fellow artists and fans, I’m able to create the music I so dearly love.”

The project started when Warner Music Nashville’s Cris Lacy suggested using AI, and both Randy and Mary agreed right away. Two AI models were trained using dozens of Travis’ past recordings.

Singer James Dupree sang a base track, and the AI was able to overlay Travis’ recreated voice on top.

Travis’ longtime producer, Kyle Lehning, said

“It’s not about how it sounds; it’s about how it feels.”

Travis was part of every step, making choices for the new song’s production.

Lacy emphasized

“It’s Randy Travis. Randy’s on the other side of the microphone.”

“It’s still his vocal.”

Mary said what made this AI project unique was

“the human element.”

She fondly recalled how emotional it was for Randy to hear his voice once more.

Looking ahead, the team and family hope there will be more music, though it’s uncharted ground.

“There may be others. We’ll see where this goes.”

Mary said.

Lacy added

“We do have other tracks. This isn’t a stunt, and it’s not a parlor trick.”

The Travis Foundation continues to promote stroke and aphasia awareness, showing there’s life and hope even after hardship.
