January 1, Israeli Hostage Remains Return Sparks Peace Push

Wyatt’s Take

  • The last Israeli hostage’s remains have returned home, clearing the way for the next step in a new peace deal.
  • This marks a turning point for Israel and the region.
  • Hamas must now choose between laying down arms or facing tough consequences.

Israel received the remains of Ran Gvili, the final hostage held by Hamas in Gaza. Gvili was a 24-year-old police officer who died during the October 2023 attack.

The return of all hostages was required before moving forward with President Trump’s peace plan, which began last October.

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu called the return of Gvili’s body an “extraordinary achievement for Israel.”

“We promised, and I promised, to bring everyone back, and we brought everyone back … to the very last one,” Netanyahu said.

“Rani is a hero of Israel. He went in first, he came out last. He came back.”

Now, Israel will reopen the Rafah crossing on its terms, but only after full security checks.

The peace plan’s next phase demands that Hamas disarm and agree to peaceful coexistence, or leave Gaza for good.

Speaking in Switzerland, President Trump said Hamas must surrender weapons within “the next three weeks,” or face military action.

“If they don’t do it, they’re going to – they’ll be blown away. Very quickly. They’ll be blown away,” Trump warned.

Hamas has responded that it might store its weapons and leave control once a neutral group takes charge.

A new leader, Ali Shaath, is set to run Gaza’s temporary government. Shaath has served in several Palestinian Authority ministries.

This moment offers hope for order and safety, but only if leaders keep their promises and stand firm.
