Jerome Powell, leader of the Federal Reserve, plans to attend the Supreme Court session this week about the firing attempt on governor Lisa Cook. This move signals strong support for Cook, something court watchers don’t see often.
The Supreme Court will be deciding if President Trump can remove Cook, after he said last August he’d like her out. Powell’s presence at the hearing is confirmed by anonymous sources.
Trump has criticized Powell and suggested firing him too, mainly because the Fed won’t lower interest rates. Lately, however, he has called such a firing “highly unlikely.”
The Justice Department is now investigating if Powell misled Congress about the cost and scope of giving the Federal Reserve building a facelift.
Powell pushed back fast, with a video message that called the criminal probe payback for resisting the pressure to cut rates.
