Wyatt’s Take

  • NY’s highest court refused to let activist groups use the courts to force racial quotas in schools.
  • The court said education policy decisions should stay with local leaders, not judges.
  • This is a win for parents who want merit to matter in schools.

Activist groups in New York tried to force schools to use race as a key factor in admissions and curriculum. The state’s top court shut down their lawsuit, protecting local control and merit-based education for now.

Judge Michael Garcia stated that New York’s constitution does not give judges the power to run education policy. He said those decisions should stay with local boards, not be handed to activist lawsuits.

IntegrateNYC had argued New York City’s schools were unfair to black and Latino students. They wanted the court to order racial quotas for student admissions and teacher hiring, and to force “culturally responsive” teaching focused on race.

The judge found no evidence of systematic racism blocking any group from attending top schools. Poor outcomes, he wrote, were not caused by any proven legal or funding barriers, but by broader issues far outside the court’s authority.

He wrote, “At best, plaintiffs’ novel input allegations represent a policy disagreement rather than a ‘gross and glaring inadequacy’ in the education being provided.”

The ruling preserves specialized programs that value student achievement. Nicole Neily of Defending Education called it a major win, saying, “the way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”

Local control and real opportunity matter more than political lawsuits about race.

This case reminds us that kitchen-table Americans know what’s best for their children’s schools. Decisions should be in the hands of parents and communities, not distant courts or political groups.
