January 1, Newsom’s Wife Calls Out Reporters at Event

Wyatt’s Take
- Jennifer Siebel Newsom scolded reporters at a press conference for ignoring her focus issue.
- She said reporters failed to question President Trump’s supposed ‘war on women.’
- Journalists defended their right to ask about other issues, not just her agenda.
California Governor Gavin Newsom’s wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, interrupted a press event to lecture reporters for not asking about what she called President Trump’s ‘war on women.’ She singled out women in the press corps, saying they weren’t raising questions about women’s issues.
“I find it incredulous that we have Planned Parenthood here, and women are 51 percent of the population, and the majority of these questions, all of these questions have been about other issues,” Siebel Newsom said.
“So it’s just fascinating, you’ve got this incredible Women’s Caucus and all these allies, and you’re not asking about it. And this happens, over and over and over and over again. You wonder why we have such a horrific war on women in this country and that these guys are getting away with it. Because you guys don’t seem to care.”
She added, “So I just offer that, with love. You have incredible women in this room, and you have these allies. Ask about what we’re here for today! Don’t you think?”
The event included leaders from Planned Parenthood and most reporters there were women. The governor had just signed off on $90 million in state grants to the group. Some reporters, like Ashley Zavala of KCRA 3 News, pushed back, saying press conferences are rare opportunities to ask Governor Newsom questions and not just discuss whatever is on the agenda. Journalists said it’s normal to ask about urgent matters, no matter what the event’s topic is supposed to be.
Siebel Newsom calls herself California’s First Partner and uses her platform to lead groups focused on equal pay and social issues. She also encourages people to handle political division by self-care, such as walks and healthy eating.

Wyatt Matters
When leaders’ families step into the spotlight to lecture working folks and the press, it’s a reminder that everyday people deserve answers, not lectures. In the heartland, we expect accountability from our public servants, no matter their title or connections.
