January 1, Mexico Denies Using Consulates to Influence US Elections

Wyatt’s Take
- Mexico’s president pushes back against claims of election meddling through consulates.
- The book alleges Mexican officials turn migrants into a political force inside America.
- Past leaders have openly challenged strict US border policies.
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed accusations that her government is using consulates across America to sway US elections and build political power. She flatly denied the claims and emphasized respect for American sovereignty.
At a Thursday press conference, Sheinbaum didn’t name the author behind these accusations but addressed the book’s core points.
“Yesterday, the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs issued a statement. It involves a person who wrote a book, claiming that through our consulates, we are engaging in politics for or within the United States,” Sheinbaum said:
This is absolutely false. Consulates have a role determined by international laws, and what our consulates essentially do is provide protection and assistance to Mexicans in the United States. That is their job; it is fundamental and that is what they are dedicated to do.
We categorically deny that they are doing anything related to U.S. politics. We are very respectful. If we demand non-intervention from other countries, we obviously comply with that constitutional principle ourselves.
Sheinbaum also made sure to point out that the book’s author isn’t connected to President Trump, though Trump has encouraged Americans to read the work. The debate centers on whether these consulates act as a political arm for Mexico in the United States.
The book raises alarms about Mexico’s 50-plus consulates inside America, claiming these offices collaborate with US political strategists to boost migrant presence as a political bloc. It highlights instances when former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) visited US cities in 2017 to rally opposition against tough border enforcement, which hurt the cartels’ profits.
AMLO is said to have pushed for Mexico’s consulates to become defense centers for migrants. The author claims this was an aggressive move to influence US policies and elections.
“AMLO was not simply aiding migrants in their legal battles in the United States; he was calling for and working toward an electoral change inside the US,” Schweizer writes. “A foreign leader so brazenly interfering in American politics was unprecedented, at least from a country with which the United States was not at war.”
This back-and-forth points to rising tension over border policy and foreign involvement in US politics, something that weighs heavy on the minds of many working folks.
Wyatt Matters
When foreign leaders try to sway what happens right here at home, it strikes at the heart of American self-rule. Everyday folks want secure borders and honest elections—matters that keep our country strong for the next generation.
