Wyatt’s Take

  • The major networks kept quiet on disturbing texts from Jay Jones.
  • Only NBC barely covered the scandal, while others ignored it.
  • Democrat leaders condemned the words but stood by Jones.

For five days after news broke of Democrat Jay Jones’ texts imagining violence against a political rival, big TV news programs didn’t say a word. Reports show CBS, ABC, and PBS skipped the story, while NBC gave just over a minute to it.

Media Research Center looked at top morning and evening news from the main networks. They tracked what was said from Friday—when the story was revealed—through Tuesday morning.

Jones’ 2022 messages said, “Put Gilbert in the crew with the two worst people you know and he receives both bullets every time.” The messages put Gilbert on the same level as Hitler and Pol Pot.

Jones also said he wished Gilbert’s wife would have to watch her own child die, all so Gilbert might change his political views, according to a source who spoke with National Review.

Even someone on MSNBC stated, “this guy should do everyone a favor and step out of the race.” They called the remarks “wildly inappropriate.”

Some big outlets ignored Jones’ comments and instead focused on how Republicans responded or on the election turmoil his actions caused.

Republican leaders in Virginia and across the country demanded Jones withdraw right away. Some Democrats called his statements wrong but refused to drop their backing for him. No Democrat senators have said Jones should pull out of the race.

Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner from Virginia admitted the comments were “appalling” but both pointed to their long history of knowing Jones and continued to support him. Kaine even said the remarks were “completely indefensible” yet saw them as out of character for Jones.
