  • Mayor Frey sidestepped questions about the shooter’s gender dysphoria.
  • He insisted we should not judge groups for one person’s actions.
  • Many feel his response dodges the real issues families face.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey addressed the aftermath of the recent shooting in Minneapolis during an interview. He was asked if the shooter’s gender dysphoria played a role in the mental struggles behind the attack, but Frey refused to make that link.

He said, “I can’t speak to what is in a different individual’s brain or mind. Obviously, we love our trans community. They’re suffering. We love our Catholic community. They’re suffering.”

Host Elizabeth Vargas pointed out that the shooter, born a boy but identifying as a girl named Robin, had expressed regret about being transgender in journal entries. One entry read, “I am tired of being trans, I wish I [had] never brain-washed myself.”

Asked if this turmoil contributed to the tragedy, Frey repeated his view. “We’ve got to stop making this about groups of people every single time one of these things goes down.”

He called for less division, saying, “Operate not out of hate for any community out there, any community, operate out of love for our children.”

He emphasized focusing on the act, not targeting a community, declaring the shooter’s actions “cowardice” and “evil.”
