January 1, Maryland Coach’s Sideline Clash Fuels Star’s Breakout Finish

Wyatt’s Take
- Brenda Frese confronted Oluchi Okananwa after a string of mistakes in the third quarter.
- Okananwa answered with 21 points and said she welcomes tough coaching.
- Frese said elite competitors should want to be challenged when the game is tight.
The confrontation happened after Okananwa struggled with turnovers and missed free throws. Frese met her as she came off the floor to demand more focus during the high-stakes game.
“I believe in you, but you got to want this moment,” Frese said.
Okananwa didn’t take the criticism personally and finished the game as the team’s leading scorer. She told reporters that she actually prefers this style of leadership from her coach.
“I love to be coached hard. That’s what she does with me every single day,” Okananwa said.
Frese has been at the helm of the Maryland program since 2002 and holds an impressive winning record. She believes that a strong relationship allows for these blunt conversations during pressure situations.
“The best of the best, the elite of the elite, want to be coached hard,” Frese said.
The coach noted that she saw the player struggling and wanted to challenge her to meet her potential. Following the exchange, the player returned to the game and immediately contributed with a basket and a steal.
Wyatt Matters
Hard-nosed coaching and personal accountability still matter, especially when pressure brings out the truth.

It’s nice to know there are some young people out there that don’t mind being challenged when they aren’t playing or working up to their potential and aren’t going to freak out and beat the person up or try to kill them because they expect much more from them. Kudos to the coach and the player. 5 stars to you both.
