January 1, Houston Boom Mystery: Residents Rattled by Sky Flash and Roof Damage

Wyatt’s Take
- A one-ton meteor reportedly streaked over Houston at 35,000 mph.
- A black rock punched through a family roof and landed inside a kitchen.
- The blast was heard miles away and rattled windows across the region.
Families in Texas got a terrifying surprise this weekend when a massive space rock came crashing down from the sky.
This shows just how quickly things can change and why we always need to be prepared for the unexpected.
Sherrie James was at her home in the Ponderosa Forest neighborhood when an unusual rock tore through her roof and floors.
Photos showed a football-sized object that left a massive gap in her ceiling before landing in her kitchen.
The Brenham Fire Department responded to calls of what sounded like a massive explosion near Highway 50.
Witnesses reported seeing a bright green flash in the sky followed by a trail of dark smoke and a loud boom.
Fired Chief Fred Windisch spoke about the damage to the home.
“It appears to be a meteorite.”
NASA experts say the object was about three feet across and weighed roughly 2,000 pounds before it broke apart.
The fireball fragmented about 29 miles above the ground, creating a pressure wave that rattled windows across several counties.
The American Meteor Society confirmed over 100 reports of the event which lasted about seven seconds.
While fire officials first thought it was plane debris, they now believe it came straight from space.
Wyatt Matters
Hardworking Texans know that protecting the home is a top priority. This strange event reminds us that the world is a wild place and neighbors matter when disaster strikes from above.
