January 1, Malibu Faces Harrowing Blaze as Evacuations Begin

A big fire hit Malibu, California, and lots of folks had to leave their homes. The fire, called the Franklin Fire, got real big, real fast. It started small on Monday night but covered a whopping 1,800 acres by Tuesday morning. This fire even came close to Pepperdine University!

Over 6,000 people were told to get out of their homes to stay safe. The brave folks from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department went door-to-door to make sure everyone knew what to do. They said it’s important to listen to the police and fire officials during times like this.

Firefighters from Los Angeles and nearby counties rushed to help fight this dangerous blaze. Strong winds called Santa Ana winds made things worse, and the National Weather Service had already warned everyone about the high risk of fire.

At Pepperdine University in Malibu, students stayed safe in the library and other buildings since classes were canceled. Helicopters swooped down to pick up water from nearby lakes to drop on the fire.

Even though the worst part of the fire moved past the campus, some smaller fires were still around. So, the university decided it was best for everyone to stay put for safety reasons.
