January 1, Letitia James Fights Fraud Charges Claims Political Targeting
Wyatt’s Take
- New York’s top attorney wants her fraud charges gone.
- Her lawyers blame Trump-era officials for unfair treatment.
- They say the case is all about politics, not justice.
Letitia James, New York’s Attorney General, is asking a judge to drop her mortgage fraud case. She says the charges are unfair, and that President Trump’s team went too far to go after her.
James’s lawyers filed a 22-page argument, saying the case was “patently unconstitutional.” They accuse Trump officials of months of “unethical behavior.” The focus is on property James bought in Virginia, which she called a “second home.” Prosecutors claim she really used the place as a rental to get a lower interest rate.
“If this brazen, continuous disregard for the law and the Constitution is not outrageous government conduct, nothing is,” her attorneys wrote.
They named several officials, including Fair Housing Finance Director Bill Pulte, Justice Department’s Ed Martin, and U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan. Pulte, the one who started the investigation, was accused of turning his agency into a “weapon” against Trump’s enemies.
The lawyers said Ed Martin pushed James to resign, calling his actions “outrageous.” They accused him of trying to force James out, not just investigate the facts.
“The letter was not an attempt to investigate the facts, nor did it hide his plain intention to pressure the sitting Attorney General of New York to resign from office or face criminal prosecution,” the lawyers claimed.
They also called the case “vindictive prosecution,” saying Halligan played a part too. The legal team believes James is being punished for standing up to Trump and that the whole process is payback for her actions against him.
