Wyatt’s Take

  • CNN found liable for defaming veteran Zachary Young
  • Jury awarded millions in damages before settlement
  • Judge ruled Young acted legally helping Afghans escape

A jury in Florida decided CNN defamed U.S. Navy veteran Zachary Young and owes him damages. The court awarded Young $4 million for lost earnings and $1 million for pain and suffering, with punitive damages to follow.

The jury was about to determine how much extra CNN should pay, but Young and CNN reached a secret settlement. This happened after an expert suggested $150 million would be fair punishment for CNN’s actions.

Young said CNN accused him of illegally profiting while rescuing people from Afghanistan as U.S. troops pulled out in 2021. He claims the network ruined his reputation and painted him as a profiteer in a story aired in November 2021.

Judge William S. Henry said, “Young did not act illegally or criminally.” The judge also explained to jurors, “You may not award an amount that would financially destroy the defendant.” He added that punitive damages should only punish for harm proven in court.

The trial lasted over three years and included dramatic testimony. CNN’s lawyers said the network accepts the decision and will “take useful lessons” from the case.

Young’s attorney called CNN’s report a “calculated attack by CNN on his character that has inflicted deep and lasting wounds.” The jury never decided punitive damages because of the last-minute settlement.

The case struck a chord in Bay County, Florida, with neighbors watching closely as a Navy vet fought to clear his name.
