Wyatt’s Take

  • A Minnesota judge stopped the feds from arresting refugees while their cases get reviewed.
  • The court says these folks followed the law and planned to stay out of trouble.
  • The government wanted more checks for green cards but didn’t charge anyone with breaking rules.

The Department of Homeland Security planned to look into 5,600 Minnesota refugees who haven’t received green cards yet. The judge says the arrests make no sense since none of these people face removal charges.

Judge John Tunheim ordered anyone detained released right away. He wrote,

“These refugees have undergone rigorous background checks and vetting, been approved by multiple federal agencies for entry, been given permission to work, received support from the government, and been resettled in the United States. None have been deemed a danger to the community or a flight risk.”

Tunheim stopped future arrests too. DHS argued for extra vetting after a year, but the judge pointed out they should wait until there’s reason to remove someone before taking action.
