January 1, Journalist Targeted Amid ICE Unrest in Minneapolis
Wyatt’s Take
- Journalists attacked while covering anti-ICE protests
- Mob violence and theft in Minnesota neighborhood
- FBI now investigating the incident
Nick Sortor, an independent journalist, had his $1,000 camera stolen while covering riots against ICE in Minneapolis. The incident was captured by another journalist, Cam Higby, as violence flared during the protests.
On Monday, Sortor and Higby were attacked by a mob that surrounded their car, vandalized it, and issued death threats while they reported on unrest in the area. While trying to recover his camera, Sortor got his hand caught in a car door as the suspects sped away down an icy sidewalk.
“Somali thugs in Minneapolis just stole @nicksortor‘s camera and then fled from him by driving down an icy sidewalk,” said Higby on social media. “Bystanders insisted we have to leave, and don’t belong in Minnesota. They followed Sortor’s vehicle for roughly 30 minutes, honking.”
Sortor described the suspects as a group that “just ROBBED me of my $1,000 camera in the Cedar Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis.” He added, “They then DRAGGED ME DOWN THE STREET as my hand got trapped in their door handle. NOBODY bothered helping DHS MUST RAID THIS PLACE!”
The FBI Rapid Response team replied to Sortor, “We’re on it,” which Sortor publicly praised. He called attention to ongoing investigations, saying, “We will NOT surrender to these thugs! Thank you, @FBIDirectorKash and @FBI_Response!”
ICE recently deployed hundreds of agents to Minnesota due to reports of large-scale welfare fraud, which officials believe may have cost taxpayers up to $9 billion, with some funds allegedly going to terrorist groups. Opposition to these operations has grown more violent, highlighted by attacks on journalists and law enforcement.
Sortor and other conservative journalists have faced violence while covering similar unrest, including in Portland, Oregon, where Sortor was previously arrested during protests targeting an ICE facility.
Other incidents at these protests have included beatings, stabbings, and armed agitators. Protesters targeting ICE have repeatedly turned to threats and physical attacks to silence those reporting from the scene.
Law enforcement remains active in investigating these incidents and working to restore order for community safety. The situation underscores rising tensions and risks for anyone documenting the impact of ICE operations and related fraud cases.
Wyatt Matters
This is a wake-up call for folks in Middle America who still believe crime and chaos only threaten far-off cities. When mob rule goes unchecked, and authorities have to step in, it reminds all hardworking people why law, order, and honest reporting are worth defending.
