January 1, Jack Smith Ally Blocked Clinton Foundation Probe
Wyatt’s Take
- Ray Hulser held back key info from the DOJ’s Clinton Foundation probe and then helped lead the fight against Trump.
- Documents reveal Hulser pushed to subpoena records for Republican Congress members.
- Evidence shows the DOJ tried to downplay and stall real Clinton Foundation investigations.
Newly released documents show Ray Hulser, once head of the DOJ’s Public Integrity Section, kept information from investigators looking into the Clinton Foundation under President Trump. He later downplayed the Clinton investigation and gave mixed messages to Trump’s DOJ and Special Counsel John Durham.
Still, Special Counsel Jack Smith picked Hulser to help go after Trump and probe Congressional Republicans, following Hulser’s suggestion to subpoena their phone records.
Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, recently demanded Hulser appear before Congress to explain his involvement in subpoenas of GOP lawmakers’ records. Jordan says these actions look like partisan attacks and warns about the weaponization of the Justice Department.
The documents include a memo requesting authority to subpoena records for Senators Blackburn, Graham, Hagerty, Hawley, Lummis, Johnson, Kennedy, Scott, Sullivan, Tuberville, and Rep. Mike Kelly. Senator Chuck Grassley’s recent document releases also highlight emails showing Smith approved these moves.
These papers also show Hulser worked to block earlier Clinton Foundation probes during his time leading DOJ’s Public Integrity Section. In 2016, Hulser reportedly shot down an FBI request to dig further, calling the evidence “de minimis” even though special counsel John Durham’s report described hundreds of thousands in questionable transfers.
Durham’s report spells out that summer 2015 communications showed funds moving internationally, hinting at possible bribery. But senior DOJ officials tried to brush it off and link the investigation only to “open source” reports, while the Little Rock FBI office insisted there was much more.
Despite Hulser’s efforts, the Little Rock and New York FBI field offices kept working on the Clinton Foundation. Their work was nearly shut down after FBI Deputy Director Andy McCabe tried to close the case, but objections kept it alive for the moment.
Americans have every reason to question if our justice system is still fair when the folks in charge look like they want to protect one team and punish the other. Stay tuned as this mess unravels.
Wyatt Matters
Our country depends on equal treatment under the law. When powerful insiders protect their friends and target political enemies, regular folks lose trust in the system. Every American deserves to know the truth and see justice done, no matter whose name is on the door.
