  • Two Iowa National Guardsmen lost their lives in a suspected ISIS attack in Syria.
  • Their bravery and family ties remind us who serves and sacrifices for America.
  • This tragedy highlights challenges facing U.S. troops abroad.

Two soldiers from Iowa, Nate Howard and Edgar Torres, were killed by a Syrian security member during a U.S. mission in Syria. The attacker, reportedly tied to ISIS and set to be dismissed for extremist views, ambushed troops during lunch, also taking the life of an American interpreter.

Chief Jeffrey Bunn, Howard’s stepfather and Meskwaki Nation Police Chief, shared,

“He loved what he was doing and would be the first in and last out, no one left behind.”

Howard was called a loving husband, faithful man, and respected brother. Torres was described by fellow soldiers as a positive presence and dedicated to family.

The troops were working on leadership missions to counter terrorism in the region.

Governor Kim Reynolds said,

“Our hearts are heavy today, and our prayers and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of our soldiers killed in action.”

The attacker, already under suspicion for leaking information to ISIS, was killed on the scene. Reports indicate he had joined the Syrian forces as a guard earlier this year and was about to be dismissed for holding extreme views.

President Trump called the shooting an ISIS attack and vowed to respond.

“We mourn the loss of three great patriots in Syria — you know how it happened, an ambush. Terrible.”

“We still have three wounded that seem to be doing pretty well. But we mourn the loss, these are great — these are three great people, and just a terrible thing.”

“This was an ISIS attack on us and Syria,”

Trump added.

“We pray for them, and their parents, and their loved ones, very, very sad … and we WILL retaliate.”

The Syrian government has recently started working with the U.S. to fight ISIS, after years of being led by former terrorist leaders. The American soldiers were carrying out key missions when they were targeted in this tragic attack.

Stories like this remind us of the price our service members pay. Stand strong for those who serve and show support to their families — they shoulder these burdens for all of us.
