Wyatt’s Take

  • Many top Biden aides stayed silent about his decline until after his presidency.
  • Committee testimony exposed concerns about his memory and awareness.
  • Advisors painted a different picture publicly than in private sessions.

Former President Biden’s inner circle mostly stayed quiet about his health and abilities while he was in office. Testimony before lawmakers shows they admitted serious worries behind closed doors, but only after Biden left the White House.

Congress interviewed 14 former Biden aides to find out how much the president really knew and what decisions he signed off on. Some aides refused to answer, others finally spoke honestly.

Jeff Zients, who led Biden’s staff, told the committee he noticed Biden started forgetting even familiar names. Zients also had to help limit the president’s walking to avoid falls.

Months before Biden dropped out of the election, Zients described him as “energized” to the public, even while having doubts behind the scenes.

Anita Dunn, another advisor, stuck by Biden on television after his poor debate, claiming he was still a “great president.” Yet privately, she told lawmakers, “I thought his voice was softer and that his childhood stutter reappeared.”

Ron Klain, a former chief of staff, revealed he panicked when Biden ended a confused debate answer with, “We beat Medicare.” Klain said debate practice worried him, but the live event was worse.

Mike Donilon, a campaign strategist, admitted they limited Biden’s travel, calling trips “a lot to ask.” Even so, Donilon defended Biden’s leadership at public events after he left office.

Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stayed loyal, claiming she never saw Biden in decline and repeated official memos defending his fitness. His doctor, Kevin O’Connor, would not comment and took the Fifth on committee questions.
