January 1, Illinois Governor Targets ICE Agents Locally

• Pritzker wants to go after ICE agents using local laws.
• He says federal officials aren’t holding them accountable.
• There’s talk of prosecution if agents break Illinois or local rules.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker said he is considering ways to prosecute ICE agents who break state or local laws. He claims there is a lack of accountability at the federal level for federal agents.

During an interview, Pritzker explained local attorneys could be used.

“That, it seems to me, is I know is a violation of Illinois law. And so the question is, can we hold the officers, the agents responsible when they do something like that?”

“If it were a police officer, we could, if it was, you know, you or me or just an average person throwing a, you know, a tear gas canister out the side of a window at people, we could hold them responsible. So it seems like they ought to be held responsible for breaking local and state laws.”

Governor Pritzker says he wants ICE agents held to the same standards as everyday citizens if they violate Illinois law.
