January 1, Illegal Immigrant Trucker Crash Sparks Outrage
Wyatt’s Take
- Federal investigators say an illegal immigrant truck driver caused a crash that killed three people in Florida.
- The driver, Harjinder Singh, failed English proficiency standards but received licenses in multiple states.
- Biden-era policy changes let Singh work in the U.S., fueling political clashes over state and federal responsibility.
Federal officials released details on a deadly Florida crash caused by Harjinder Singh, an illegal immigrant truck driver who made a banned U-turn on the Florida Turnpike. Singh, who entered the country in 2018, was denied work clearance under Trump but later approved under Biden policies.
He worked for White Hawk Carriers and was given commercial driving licenses in California, Washington, and New Mexico, despite failing to meet required English standards. An English test after the crash showed he barely understood traffic instructions.

Singh blocked the highway using an “official use only” turn. His actions resulted in the deaths of three people in a minivan.
Investigators found that Singh was licensed even though he could not understand or speak enough English—as mandated for safely operating large trucks. Federal and state officials are now trading blame for how he was cleared to drive and work, with California and the federal government pointing fingers at each other.

Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy called the deaths entirely avoidable, blaming “reckless decisions” and lack of enforcement. He promised that accountability and new safeguards are coming.
False. Harjinder Singh is in the United States illegally and his work authorization was rejected under the Trump Administration on September 14, 2020. It was later approved under the Biden Administration June 9, 2021.
