Federal officials arrested Morris Brown, a 45-year-old Liberian native, in Minneapolis for allegedly lying about his citizenship to land state jobs and get military benefits. He was caught after years of dodging immigration rules and faces possible removal and criminal charges.

DHS says Brown came to the country on a student visa in 2014 but lost his legal status the next year for not enrolling in school. Even after that, he still managed to get into the Pennsylvania Army National Guard but left his post in 2015. Officials later discharged him in 2022 under other than honorable conditions.

“This alien tried every trick in the book to remain in the United States after losing legal status. We will use every tool at our disposal to ensure he faces justice for his many violations of the law.”

Brown kept filing for legal residency—once under the Liberian Refugee Immigration Fairness program, and later as a would-be citizen because of his military time. Investigators found both applications included false claims and missed facts, including lying about his past in the military and U.S. citizenship.

During the latest review under Operation Twin Shield, officials say they uncovered signs of marriage fraud and more lies about his citizenship on official records. ICE stepped in, and now Brown’s looking at deportation and more charges.

The Trump-era enforcement push in Minnesota has led to hundreds of cases under the microscope. USCIS says it found 275 cases of suspected fraud, and nearly half of applications checked in the area showed problems. The agency warns anyone helping non-citizens who depend on public benefits that they could pay for it financially. They’re tightening checks to make sure green card seekers contribute to this country and don’t just skate through paperwork.
