Wyatt’s Take

  • Federal authorities caught a school leader lying about citizenship.
  • Loaded guns and cash were found after his arrest.
  • He faces decades in prison and hefty fines.

The ex-superintendent of Des Moines schools is set to plead guilty to pretending he was a U.S. citizen. Immigration officials say Ian Roberts ran from agents when they pulled him over in a school vehicle.

Officers and state troopers found his car hidden in the woods with a loaded handgun and $3,000 cash inside. Three more guns were taken from his home. He was charged with making a false statement for employment and having a gun while in the country illegally.

Roberts marked his I-9 form as a U.S. citizen and showed a Social Security card and driver’s license when hired in 2023. He also listed himself as a citizen on his application for an administrator’s license.

Authorities said Roberts had been ordered to appear before an immigration judge in 2020, with a removal set for 2024. His plea deal means no further gun or false statement charges from this investigation.

If convicted, Roberts could get up to 20 years in prison, two big fines, and years of supervision after release. Officials called his case another example of outsiders abusing America’s trust.

“An illegal alien was able to falsely claim U.S. citizenship, get a top job in a public school system, and illegally possess firearms. Yet again, bad actors from around the world are committing fraud and taking advantage of the American people. This must end, and thankfully, the Trump Administration is taking strong action,” said Cooper Smith from the America First Policy Institute.

Stay alert and pay attention to who’s leading your local schools. Leaders must be held to the law just like everyone else.
