January 1, House Set to Pass Marijuana Legalization Bill
A bill that would legalize marijuana is set to pass through the House this week, marking a distinct change in the country’s attitude regarding the war on drugs.
“What we have seen is that the majority of people now realize that the war on drugs failed,” said Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), a Congressional Cannabis Caucus co-chair. “Drugs are more accessible and cheaper and more potent and dangerous. Nobody won this war, except people who were involved with the drug dealers themselves.”
Last week, the Senate unanimously passed legislation to expand scientific and medical research on marijuana and its compounds.
Thirty-seven states have already legalized medical marijuana, and 18 states have legalized marijuana for recreational use.
A recent poll found that 91% of U.S. adults believe that marijuana should be legal, with most participants stating it should be legal for both medical and recreational use.
