January 1, House Eyes Tougher Rules On Sanctuary Cities

Chairman Jim Jordan says the House Judiciary Committee may soon vote on a bill targeting so-called sanctuary cities. These places refuse to help federal agents enforce immigration laws, creating tension with federal authorities.
Jordan points out that 11 states, 18 large cities, three counties, and Washington, D.C. fall into this category. He claims together, they make up a third of the entire U.S. population.
“We’re looking at passing a bill to deal with this sanctuary jurisdiction issue,” he said. “We think we’re going to have a markup in two weeks in our committee to address this. That may be, well, you know, there’s various ways to look at it.”
He explains the risk comes when local police let illegal immigrants charged with crimes go free, instead of alerting ICE.
“They got a guy in their jail. ICE knows it’s an illegal migrant who’s also been charged with some other crime, they get a notice saying it’s a detainer notice saying, ‘Hey, if you’re going to let this guy out, just give us a heads-up. Give us 48 hours. We’ll come and arrest him there at the jail,’” Jordan said.
“Instead, they release him to the streets. That’s a problem there. We should work at some way in our federal law that you can’t do that. You have to work with federal law enforcement, when you have that scenario.”
So far, Jordan hasn’t shared details for punishing areas that refuse to follow the rules, but his proposal would require local officials to inform the feds about criminal illegal immigrants.
This push comes just as Homeland Security is ending operations in Minneapolis, a city known for protests against ICE and strong sanctuary policies. Minnesota remains a stronghold of resistance, though there has been some movement toward cooperation with border officials.
Stay tuned as Congress gears up for another showdown over law, order, and America’s future.
Wyatt Matters
Folks in the heartland value safety and following the law. When cities refuse to work with federal authorities, it puts honest citizens at risk. That’s why strong action on sanctuary policies is a priority for everyday Americans.
