January 1, Hollywood STUNNED as Gen Z Ditches Woke Star Wars for YouTuber Films

Wyatt’s Take
- Gen Z audiences rejected Hollywood’s latest woke Star Wars offering in favor of independent films made by YouTubers
- Two YouTube-backed films — ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession’ — packed theaters while corporate studios scrambled to understand what happened
- This massive shift signals young Americans are tired of agenda-driven entertainment and want authentic storytelling from creators they trust
Something remarkable happened at movie theaters across America this past weekend. Young audiences showed up in massive numbers — but they weren’t there for Hollywood’s latest big-budget Star Wars production.
Instead, Generation Z filled seats for two independent films backed by YouTube creators: ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession.’ The turnout left entertainment industry insiders scratching their heads as traditional studio releases got left in the dust.
The shift represents a seismic change in how young Americans consume entertainment. Rather than trust corporate Hollywood’s tired formulas and political messaging, they’re following content creators they’ve built relationships with online.
‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession’ both came from YouTube personalities who built loyal followings by connecting directly with audiences. No studio executives, no focus groups, no committee-approved scripts designed to check every woke box.
Hollywood has spent years lecturing Americans about what they should think and how they should feel. Meanwhile, independent creators focused on telling compelling stories that resonate with real people.
The box office numbers don’t lie. When given the choice between a multimillion-dollar franchise film and movies made by creators they trust, young viewers picked authenticity over spectacle.
This isn’t just about entertainment preferences. It’s about a generation that grew up with internet access rejecting top-down control of culture. They want content that speaks to them, not content designed by corporate committees.
Traditional studios have become so disconnected from everyday Americans that they can’t compete with YouTubers working on fraction-of-the-budget productions. The talent and storytelling that matters isn’t coming from California boardrooms anymore.
Wyatt Matters
When regular folks with cameras and creativity can outperform billion-dollar studios, that’s the free market working exactly as it should. Americans are voting with their wallets for authentic voices over establishment gatekeepers, and that’s a beautiful thing for our culture.
