  • Medical group Do No Harm wants the FTC to act
  • They say gender surgeries and drugs for minors aren’t safe or proven
  • Many states are already passing laws to protect children

Do No Harm, a medical group, has urged the FTC to protect children from transgender drugs and surgeries. They’re calling out what they see as unsafe and untested treatments given to kids.

“We anticipate the FTC will take meaningful action considering the public comments it has received – protecting vulnerable children from unsafe and unproven sex change interventions, while also seeking justice for those who have already been harmed,” said Dr. Kurt Miceli.

He said, “The FTC has a longstanding history of protecting consumers from deceptive practices.” Do No Harm disputes claims that these treatments are safe and help prevent suicide, and they pushed back on the idea that puberty blockers are truly reversible or that regret rates are low.

According to the group, for too long, parents have been told these procedures are safe, but the facts show otherwise. They argue these medical practices can harm children and families alike.

The FTC opened a public inquiry in July to hear from people who say they were misled or hurt by these treatments. Before the 60-day period for comments, the FTC held a workshop focused on the danger and deception in gender medical care for minors.

Miceli said fixing these problems takes action from the government and medical field. He noted, “The Trump Administration is pursuing a multifaceted strategy to keep kids safe from harmful transgender procedures.” Miceli also highlighted that without new laws from Congress, states must step up—more than half already have.

He added it’s important for more doctors to come forward and push for evidence-based care. In his words, “Simply, US medical associations must follow the evidence, just as many European nations have done, and call for an end to these harmful practices in children.”

The FTC has not yet replied to requests for comment.
