  • Protesters interrupted a church service in Minnesota with Don Lemon present.
  • The Department of Justice is investigating possible federal law violations.
  • Questions rise about free speech versus respect for religious spaces.

Activists and former TV host Don Lemon entered Cities Church in St. Paul, aiming to halt the worship service. They crowded the church for about 30 minutes, forcing churchgoers to leave and sparking debate on their tactics.

The protest, called “Operation Pullup,” was led by Nekima Levy-Armstrong and supported by groups such as the Racial Justice Network. Protesters chanted slogans like “hands up, don’t shoot” as Lemon defended their actions, comparing them to civil rights protests.

“A house of worship is not a public forum for your protest! It is a space protected from exactly such acts by federal criminal and civil laws! Nor does the First Amendment protect your pseudo journalism of disrupting a prayer service. You are on notice!”

The Department of Justice, led by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, launched an investigation into whether the protest broke the federal FACE Act, a law that protects religious services from interference and intimidation.

Lemon argued with church members and insisted that their actions were protected by the Constitution, while Pastor Jonathan Parnell said, “It’s shameful to interrupt a public gathering of christians in worship.” The law cited by the Justice Department forbids intimidation or obstruction at places of worship.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt weighed in, stating:

“President Trump will not tolerate the intimidation and harassment of Christians in their sacred places of worship.”

Organizers said they protested because a pastor at the church works for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Lemon narrated scenes of distress during the disruption, noting scared congregants and the trauma caused by the event.
