  • The Justice Department charged 31 more people in a major ATM fraud ring linked to a violent Venezuelan gang.
  • Authorities say these criminals used advanced malware to steal millions from American banks.
  • Law enforcement vows to keep fighting until these foreign threat groups are stopped for good.

The Justice Department charged 31 new suspects in a sweeping ATM theft scheme. This brings the total to 87 people facing charges, all tied to the Tren de Aragua gang known for violent crime.

Officials say most charged are Venezuelan and Colombian nationals, including illegal immigrants, who targeted banks with a high-tech attack. “Tren de Aragua is a complex terrorist organization that commits serious financial crimes in addition to horrific rapes, murders, and drug trafficking,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said.

According to prosecutors, the thieves used Ploutus malware to break into ATMs and force them to spit out all their cash. The process included scouting banks, breaking inside the machines, and installing malware to empty them out.

“The Ploutus malware was also designed to delete evidence of its presence, creating a false impression to mislead bank employees from discovering the breach,” prosecutors explained.

Millions stolen from US banks were sent back to finance even more crimes by the gang abroad. “We will not stop until we completely dismantle and destroy TdA and other foreign terrorists that import chaos to America,” said Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.

The suspects face serious charges like bank fraud, computer crimes, and aiding foreign terrorist groups. Federal agents urge banks to upgrade ATM security, especially older machines, to guard against these attacks.

Don’t let criminals exploit America’s communities. Stay alert and protect your hard-earned money.
