- Former CNN producer John Griffin was sentenced to 19 years in prison and 15 years’ supervised release after pleading guilty to enticing a minor through interstate commerce, with additional charges against him dropped as part of the plea deal.
- Griffin, who worked as a senior producer for CNN after previous roles at ABC, Fox News, and CBS, manipulated a woman online into bringing her 9-year-old daughter to his home in Vermont, where he committed acts of child molestation.
- In addition to this case, Griffin was accused of attempting to lure other minors using online platforms, underlining the importance of vigilance in protecting children from online predators.
A court in Vermont has handed down a sentence of 19 years in prison and 15 years’ supervised release to former CNN producer John Griffin.
The 46-year-old Princeton University graduate had pleaded guilty in December to enticing a minor through interstate commerce.
The details of Griffin’s crimes send shockwaves through the nation, sparking widespread outrage and calls for a more thorough examination of online predators.
Griffin, a Connecticut resident and father of three, manipulated a woman he met online into bringing her 9-year-old daughter to his $2.5 million Vermont ski retreat where he committed despicable acts of child molestation.
Adding insult to injury, Griffin paid the mother $3,000 in July 2020 to fly from Nevada to Boston, where he picked them up in his Tesla and drove them to his hideaway.
Heather Carriker, the mother involved, has also been charged with child abuse and child sexual assault. The status of her case remains unknown at this time.
This case exposes the appalling activities of Griffin, who attempted to lure other minors into similar acts using online communication platforms like Kik and Google Hangout.
Among his strategies, he allegedly proposed a “virtual training session” for a mother and her 14-year-old daughter that involved them removing their clothing and touching each other.
A year and a half prior to his sentencing, Griffin was arrested on multiple counts of inviting girls as young as 7 to his Vermont home for his so-called “sexual subservience” training.
His online activities are a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk in the digital world, and the urgent need for parents to be vigilant.
Griffin’s connections to major news networks are alarming.
He had a successful career in media before his shocking fall from grace, working as a senior producer at CNN for eight years after stints at ABC, Fox News, and CBS.
His professional relationship with since-ousted lead anchor Chris Cuomo has also been spotlighted.
Despite attempts by Griffin’s attorney, David Kirby, to procure a lighter sentence due to a difficult marriage and struggles with cocaine and alcohol abuse, Prosecutor Michael Drescher stood firm.
Drescher described Griffin as a calculated manipulator and stated, “short of ending a person’s life, it’s hard to imagine a worse offense [than what he did].”
The impact of Griffin’s actions on the young victim is heartbreaking. Speaking via video conference, the child, identified as Jane Doe due to her age, said she will “never trust anyone again”.
The child’s grandmother added that the girl was “forever ruined” by Griffin’s actions.
Bottom Line
This case serves as a chilling reminder that child predators can lurk anywhere, even among the well-educated and affluent.
It underscores the urgency for parents to remain vigilant and for stricter measures to be in place to protect our children from online predators.
