January 1, Detroit Officers Face Firing Over Immigration Calls

Wyatt’s Take

  • Detroit cops could lose their jobs for contacting border officials during traffic stops.
  • City leaders say trusting law enforcement means steering clear of federal immigration work.
  • Some question if firing is fair compared to discipline in past cases.

In Detroit, the police chief is pushing to fire two officers who contacted federal border officials during routine traffic stops. This goes against local policy, which says police should stay out of immigration enforcement.

Both officers are already suspended, and their termination will go before the city’s Board of Police Commissioners.

Chief Todd Bettison said, “Maintaining community trust is critical to public safety efforts.” He made it clear the department doesn’t get involved in immigration matters.

City leaders jumped in. Rep. Rashida Tlaib supported firing the officers, saying it’s about community trust. Councilwoman Mary Waters called contacting border officials “biased policing,” asking, “Why would you do that? Just because someone had an accent, for real?”

Retired Assistant Chief Steve Dolunt admitted the officers broke the rules by calling border patrol but wondered if firing them matches how past cases have been handled. “That being said, there have been a lot more egregious things that have occurred in the police department and people have not been terminated,” he said.

The mayor’s office confirmed the city will keep its hands off immigration enforcement, promising to stand by that policy moving forward.

Of course the police should be able to do their job and report illegals to federal enforcement! Of course they should be able to interact with federal enforcement. It is one way to deport people who broke OUR immigration laws. NO Border, No Country! Police are now supposed to pick and choose the laws they take an oath to support? The Oath to support the Constitution of America infers they will enforce the law of the land. Whose land? AMERICAN CITIZENS LAND! Not Mexico, China, Iran, or any other country, OUR country. Anyone who opposes any local Police anywhere in the United States does not support law. They want to pick and choose laws! SHAME on them!
People need to understand what is on the line with the insane Biden Open Border. Illegals touch every corner of the country with regard to city, state and federal programs! Services that should be available to American Citizens are diverted to illegals. Does it make sense that New York would use 700.00 a night hotels to house these folks? Ask yourself, have you EVER spent months in a 700.00 a night hotels to house? I sure haven’t. WAKE UP AMERICA! Use the voting box and fight back against this invasion.

Well said. ALL law enforcement take an oath to uphold ALL laws, state and federal, and to uphold the Constitution. For some pencil pushing corrupt politicians to tell them to not enforce specific laws is telling them to not do their job which constitutes dereliction of duty and cowardice. 🇺🇸🚔🇺🇸

City officials should be cited for their dereliction of duty, an illegal is a felon who has already broken the law, therefore should be arrested and deported immediately. City officials are harboring a fugitive and should be held accountable.

This story is not an accurate representation of the incident(s). The chief said the sergeant and officer are in trouble for contacting Border Patrol for translation service and the Border Patrol agents determined the offenders were illegal and took custody of them. I attempted to obtain a copy of the department policy the officers supposedly violated through a Freedom of Information request but, when I saw how unprofessional the department’s website was, riddled with spelling and grammatical errors, I already knew everything I needed to know about the Detroit Police Department.

The federal government needs to set up systems to make certain that no federal funds are being used to support or maintain any illegal individual in these sanctuary cities. Further, but our government needs to review every dollar going into the sanctuary cities, and where possible, stops the cash flow to them until they start following federal law. What I feel to understand, is if they are breaking the rules or law regarding contacting the federal government, why is the government not filing litigation against the cities and cutting off all federal funding until they start following the law!

I’m sure ICE would hire them on the spot.

As a law. Enforcement officer I take the same oath as I did when I enlisted in the military, to protect and defend and support the laws of the United States and the Constitution. The supreme court has ruled that the Constitution is the supreme law of the land. Rules written by Local States are still subject to the supreme law of the. Land.No exceptions. If the individual States or cities do fire these officers then they are setting the taxpayers of their area up for major lawsuits.
