Two top Democrat political groups have come under fire for accepting hundreds of thousands from CoreCivic, a private prison company with immigration detention contracts.

The Democratic Governors Association (DGA) and Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association (DLGA) both received six-figure donations from the firm, even as their party attacked tough immigration enforcement.

After the news broke, the DLGA changed course. A spokesperson said the group would donate all recent CoreCivic money to the National Immigration Law Center and refuse future donations.

“We strongly condemn the Trump administration’s appalling immigration tactics, and the only way to stop them is by electing more Democrats,” said a DGA spokesperson.

The DGA insists the funds have no effect on policy decisions by Democrat governors.

The story throws a spotlight on whether party leaders practice what they preach about immigration and big money in politics. Heartland families expect honesty and real values—not just slogans.
