Federal agents arrested Melitón Cordero, a DEA supervisory special agent, for his alleged role in a bribery and visa fraud operation. Investigators say he exploited a system meant to help law enforcement, hurting public trust.

“This individual was entrusted by the American people to faithfully execute his duties and represent the American Government abroad as a leader within the DEA,” said U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro.

After the arrest, the U.S. abruptly closed its DEA anti-narcotics office in the Dominican Republic. Officials called the actions “a disgusting and disgraceful violation of public trust.”

“It is a disgusting and disgraceful violation of public trust to use one’s official capacity for personal gain,” posted U.S. Ambassador Leah F. Campos.

The Dominican government said the office closure was a U.S. decision, not related to their country. DEA, FBI, and other agencies use special visas to bring in foreign nationals to help in investigations that tackle crime and drugs.

The Dominican Republic is key in the fight against drug trafficking. American agents and Dominican authorities work closely together, even at secure military and airport areas.
