- Daytona Beach declared a state of emergency after a violent spring break weekend.
- Authorities reported five shootings and more than 130 arrests across Volusia County.
- City leaders imposed an overnight curfew for minors and tightened enforcement.
City officials issued an overnight curfew for minors to try and regain control of the streets.
Local law enforcement is fed up with the high-risk activity that is draining public resources.
“Daytona Beach should no longer position itself as a Spring Break destination,” Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young said.
“It is not a decision against tourism, but a decision against unsanctioned high-risk activity that strains resources, disrupts our community and places unnecessary demands on public safety personnel.”
The chaos forced thousands of people to flee the beaches as shots rang out in broad daylight.
Locals are being told to stay off the streets after dark while the city tries to restore order.
