  • Cuban leaders say they won’t back down to America and want Maduro freed.

Tens of thousands showed up outside the US embassy in Havana after news broke that 32 Cuban officers were killed during an American military action in Venezuela. This operation led to the arrest of President Maduro, who now faces serious drug trafficking and weapons charges in New York.

Venezuelan and Cuban officials say dozens lost their lives in the fighting. Protesters demand Maduro’s release, and his wife is also facing charges in the US, both pleading not guilty.

“No, imperialists, we have absolutely no fear of you … and we don’t like to be threatened,” said Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel during the protests.

“You will not intimidate us … No one here surrenders. The current emperor of the White House and his infamous secretary of state haven’t stopped threatening me.”

The crowd waved Cuban flags and shouted, “Down with imperialism!” and “Cuba will prevail!” This protest was organized by the Cuban government, a day after thousands gathered at their military headquarters to honor the fallen officers whose remains were returned to Cuba.
