Democratic Rep. Angie Craig (MN) was assaulted in the elevator of her apartment building in Washington, D.C., her office said in a statement.
Nike Coe, her chief of staff, also noted that there is “no evidence that the incident was politically motivated.”
The assault occurred around 7:15 a.m. on Thursday. The third-term congresswoman “defended herself from the attacker and suffered bruising, but is otherwise physically okay,” Coe said.
According to the report filed with the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, Craig spotted the assailant in the lobby “acting erratic” and “as if he was under the influence of an unknown substance.” She said “good morning” and he followed her into the elevator and started “to randomly do push ups.”
The attacker punched Craig in the chin and grabbed her neck, per the police report, and the lawmaker threw her hot coffee in self-defense before the suspect fled.
The Metropolitan Police Department issued a news release regarding the incident, announcing that Kendrick Hamlin, 26, “of no fixed address” was arrested and charged with simple assault.
“When the victim defended themselves, the suspect fled the scene,” police said.
