Wyatt’s Take

  • James Comey tries to toss out charges that he lied to Congress.
  • His lawyers include folks who got his leaked FBI memos.
  • The defense team is full of old friends tangled up in the same scandals.

James Comey wants a court to drop charges accusing him of lying to Congress.

His legal team is raising big questions, since two of his lawyers are the very men he leaked sensitive FBI documents to.

The 2019 Inspector General report shows Comey shared classified memos about his meetings with President Trump with Patrick Fitzgerald and David Kelley.

Both are now defending him in court against District Attorney Lindsey Halligan.

Federalist CEO Sean Davis pointed out this keeps those key witnesses from testifying against Comey and hides their conversations behind attorney-client rules.

Prosecutors want a special team to sort through the evidence, worried these lawyers are too tangled up in past leaks to play fair.

Comey and Fitzgerald’s relationship reaches back to the Bush years.

Both handled the famous Plame affair that landed an innocent man, Scooter Libby, behind bars—until President Trump issued a pardon.

Kelley and Fitzgerald both received classified FBI material from Comey in 2017 when they were not government officials.

Years later, they are by his side as he pleads not guilty, making his defense look as questionable as ever.

The trial is set for January 2026.

Already the American public is left wondering how much of Washington’s justice system runs on backroom deals and old pals helping each other out.

If you think these folks in Washington play by different rules, you’re not alone.
