January 1, Classic Cartoon Character Is Now Officially LGBT
Scooby-Doo’s Velma Dinkley is now officially gay.
A now-viral clip from the new movie “Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!” shows the bespectacled member of Mystery Inc. swooning over another female character.
Multiple outlets, including Variety and The Washington Post, noted that the Scooby-Doo fan base has theorized for decades that Velma is a lesbian.
Filmmaker James Gunn, who wrote the early 2000s live-action movies, noted that he “tried” to make Velma a lesbian in the scripts.
“In 2001 Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script,” Gunn tweeted in 2020. “But the studio just kept watering it down & watering it down, becoming ambiguous (the version shot), then nothing (the released version) & finally having a boyfriend (the sequel).”
