  • A California jury ordered Bill Cosby to pay $59.25 million in damages over allegations tied to a 1972 incident.
  • Donna Motsinger, now 84, said Cosby drugged and assaulted her after she met him decades ago.
  • The jury added $40 million in punitive damages, and Cosby’s team says it will appeal.

A California jury just handed Bill Cosby a massive $59.25 million judgment for an incident dating back to 1972. Donna Motsinger, now 84 years old, finally took the comedian to court over allegations of drugging and assault.

The jury first awarded millions for suffering and distress before tacking on another $40 million in punitive damages.

Motsinger was in her 30s when she says Cosby followed her home and later gave her what she thought was aspirin in a limousine. She testified that she lost consciousness and woke up later at home with no memory of how she got there.

“She [then] knew she had been drugged and raped by Bill Cosby,” the suit said.

Cosby did not testify during this trial, and his legal team has already promised to appeal the decision. He continues to claim that any past encounters were consensual, though he told lawyers he could not recall if he had sex with Motsinger.

“It has been 54 years to get justice, and I know it’s not complete for the rest of the women, but I hope it helps them a little bit,” Motsinger said.

Cosby previously spent three years in prison before a conviction was overturned on a technicality in 2021. This civil victory for Motsinger follows similar cases where the legal system is finally addressing long-standing accusations against the former TV star.

Wyatt Matters

Middle Americans believe in personal accountability and the idea that no one is above the law, no matter how famous they are. Victims deserve a fair shot at justice, even when the road to accountability takes decades.
