Wyatt’s Take

  • Police released the main person of interest in the Brown University shooting.
  • No arrests have been made; the investigation is ongoing.
  • Officials say there is no immediate threat to the public.

Police let go of the man they thought was connected to the shooting at Brown University that took two lives and hurt nine others. Officials said new evidence led them to look in a different direction for the suspect.

The person was picked up at a hotel in Rhode Island and talked to by police. Brown University later confirmed he was released and said there is no current danger to the campus or nearby community.

“Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate, and local police have advised they do not believe there is any immediate threat to Brown or the local community,” the university said.

Attorney General Peter Neronha noted, “Some evidence had pointed to” the person, but now the search has changed course. “So what that means is that this person of interest needs to be released,” he said.

Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez explained the investigation had not produced the results they hoped for. “It’s not a mistake. It’s just how investigations work,” he said.

Right now, seven victims are still in the hospital, one remains in critical condition, and another has been sent home. The violence happened as students prepared for finals on campus.

Stay alert as the search for answers continues. Justice for the victims matters for every community.
