January 1, Breaking: Spinach Recall Sweeps Nation, Listeria Danger Looms

Over 40 fresh spinach products are being recalled due to the presence of listeria, as revealed by federal health officials. Solata Foods LLC, located in Newburgh, New York, has issued the recall for “Fresh Spinach” as it may be contaminated with listeria, an organism that can lead to serious and even fatal infections, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Market Food Inspectors, along with Food Laboratory personnel, detected the organism in a 9-ounce package of Bogopa fresh spinach. Solata Foods has since halted production of that specific product.

These fresh spinach products, available in various sizes, were distributed to local retailers. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recall so far. However, customers who have purchased the product are advised to return it for a refund.

Listeriosis, an infection caused by eating food contaminated with the bacteria, can last anywhere from days to weeks depending on the severity. Mild symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

In more severe cases, individuals may experience headaches, stiff necks, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, according to the FDA. It is particularly dangerous for young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems, sometimes even proving fatal.

Pregnant women who contract an infection are at risk of miscarriages and stillbirths.

Good info to get out–I raise my own Wild Montana spinach.
as far as I know the secrets of where it is grown are not disclosed.
Once you get a start of it, it is almost hard to get rid of, so I let mine go to seed, then give them as ‘friend gifts” to others. I do not tell them I have seeds, to protect Montana’s rights.
