January 1, Boar’s Head Recalls 207,000 Pounds of Deli Meat Over Deadly Listeria Concerns
Boar’s Head, a popular deli meat brand, is retracting a staggering 207,000 pounds of its products currently being sold nationwide. This alarming recall is due to possible contamination from a potentially lethal bacteria called listeria.
The products involved, which include deli staples like liverwurst and ham, are being thoroughly investigated by officials. The company was driven to initiate this recall when a liverwurst product from a store in Maryland was found to harbor the lethal bacteria. This troubling discovery was made amidst an ongoing investigation into a multistate listeria outbreak that has left 34 people sickened across 13 different states. All but one of these individuals required hospitalization, reiterating the serious nature of this bacteria.
The outbreak sadly resulted in the deaths of two individuals, one based in Illinois and another in New Jersey, bringing the severity of the situation to a new level.
One customer expressed her deep concern about the situation, stating, “That’s scary. That’s pretty scary, because since I didn’t hear about it, it subjects me to be sick and have an adverse reaction.” She voiced fears that many across the nation may be feeling due to this potentially harmful situation.
Health officials have theorized that the outbreak is most likely related to sliced meat from deli counters, as many of those affected had consumed turkey, liverwurst, or ham. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has announced that further testing is underway to determine the link between the sampled Maryland product and the nationwide outbreak.
The recall encompasses Boar’s Head ready-to-eat liverwurst produced from June 11 to July 17 and includes other deli meat products like beef salami, bologna and ham that were manufactured on the same machinery around that time.
Boar’s Head spokesperson stated that the company is collaborating with authorities while also conducting an in-depth investigation into the matter.
The public has been advised to discard any affected products immediately or return them to the store from which they were purchased. Consumers are also cautioned to thoroughly clean their refrigerators to prevent the spread of the potentially fatal bacteria.
Listeria, a bacteria that can survive in both refrigeration and freezing temperatures, poses a severe threat, particularly to people who are pregnant, their newborns, adults aged 65 or older, and those with weakened immune systems. Thus, maintaining utmost vigilance in the face of such outbreaks is crucial.
