Wyatt’s Take

  • One more Benghazi suspect now in U.S. hands
  • He faces murder and terror charges after years on the run
  • Justice for lost Americans remains a top priority

The man accused of helping attack and kill four Americans in Benghazi back in 2012 is finally in U.S. custody. After years on the run, Zubayr Al-Bakoush faces federal charges for his alleged role in one of the deadliest assaults on American diplomats overseas.

Al-Bakoush, age 58, was captured overseas with the aid of international partners. U.S. officials call it a “foreign transfer of custody,” as he was turned over by foreign authorities and flown to Virginia, arriving early Friday morning.

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the arrest at the Department of Justice, with the FBI Director and U.S. Attorney at her side.

“We have never stopped seeking justice for that crime against our nation,” Bondi said. “Today, I am proud to announce that the FBI has arrested one of the key participants behind the Benghazi attack. Zubayr Al-Bakoush is now in our custody.”

Al-Bakoush is accused in a newly unsealed indictment of taking part in the killing of Ambassador Chris Stevens, State Department official Sean Smith, and aiding attemped murder of other Americans. The attack left four Americans dead after militants stormed the U.S. post in Benghazi, set fires, and opened fire on staff.

He has been wanted for over a decade. This arrest marks the third time the U.S. has brought a Benghazi suspect onto American soil to face charges. In recent years, others tied to the attack were captured and convicted, with sentences ranging from nearly twenty to twenty-eight years in prison.

The Benghazi events have stayed at the center of political debate and intense hearings over government accountability and security failures. During this latest announcement, Bondi reminded the public of earlier controversies and quoted Hillary Clinton’s famous words from her 2013 testimony:

“Hillary Clinton famously once said about Benghazi, ‘What difference at this point does it make?'” Bondi remarked. “Well, it makes a difference to Donald Trump.”

Americans still demand real answers after all these years. Folks want to see those responsible brought to justice, not just endless talk in Washington.

If you believe in holding our enemies to account, stay tuned for updates as the trial moves forward.
